Big Picture : Rorke's Drift

This weeks Big Picture is another 2 for 1 offer. This was a recreation of the famous battle at Rorke's Drift on the 22nd & 23rd January 1879. The engagement took place during the Anglo-Zulu War and followed the destruction of a large British Force at Isandlwana earlier in the day. This game was recreated by the Southend on Sea Wargames Group for Salute 2006.

  1. Recently read a book about the Zulu Wars - fascinating stuff. The two key officers at Rorke's Drift were both renowned for being useless / anonymous (the reason they were posted to Rorke's Drift itself was partly due to this). They were heaped with honours (to help expunge the shame of the defeat the same day) and both pretty much sank back into obscurity despite having every advantage of progressing their careers following the battle.

  2. AWESOME!! I really really aspire to doing this sort of thing eventually ... but getting my current gaming group into historicals is going to be a slow patient process. The Wargames Factory Plastics Brits and Zulus though have been sorely tempting me to just take the plunge ... and do up a Roark's table and just spring it on the group. Thanks for the post very cool stuff!
