What is the point of a demo game at a show? My personal view is that its a form of hobby outreach, encouraging non-historical wargamers and non-wargamers alike to give our wonderful hobby a try. So it should come as no surprise that one of my personal bugbears is the unlabelled demo game. This is a subject I have discussed many times (so I apologise if you've followed my channel or blog long enough to have heard this before), and it is a phenomenon that is thankfully becoming rarer and rarer. But its not entirely gone away.

ReplyDeleteAn interesting and well articulated video, I agree with your points. It is frustrating looking at a demo game with all the gamers with their backs to you and no interaction with the public.
ReplyDeleteI regularly do participation games I try my best to interact, inform and sell our great hobby, I am a firm believer that we should display our games to the general public and not assume everyone who comes into a wargame event is a long time wargamer.
Excellent blog keep up the good work.
Willz.
Apologies for my tardy reply! Thank you for your response, and thank you for your support.
DeleteI agree with all you said - that's exactly what demo games should be about. I'd only add that sometimes the demonstrators can be a bit too helpful and want to tell you something when really you just want to look and marvel.
ReplyDeleteYou look healthier this week btw.
Lol, I get what you mean. We usually have a lot we can talk about but when I'm interacting with visitors I usually try to keep my initial contact short and descriptive. Then if they response with anything more than a polite thank you, I may expand with extra information. The key, as with all public interactions, is to listen to the person and adjust what you are going to say accordingly.
DeleteWe've had this very conversation many times as you know. I'm in 100% agreement with you ol boy!
ReplyDeleteWe're becoming old pro's at this
DeleteExcellent points all round, and I thoroughly agree: it wouldn't be a huge inconvenience for the organisers to politely require at least some basic printed info from the demonstrators!
ReplyDeleteGlad you're feeling better.
I think its generally expected but not always carried out
